Who We Are

The Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) is a not-for-profit society that represents Inuit in the seven communities of the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut. KIA is a Designated Inuit Organization under the Nunavut Final Agreement and one of three Regional Inuit Associations (RIAs) associated with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors provides political direction for the organization, develops, and monitors policies that direct the operations of Kivalliq Inuit Association. 

The role of the board of directors under this governance model is: 

To establish guiding principles, policies and plans for the organization 

To delegate responsibility and authority to those who are responsible for enacting those principles, policies and plans 

The Board of Directors is composed of a President, Vice-President, and a Secretary-Treasurer and seven (7) community directors from each community who are elected through a region-wide election.

KIA Subsidiaries 

Sakku Investments – An Inuit Birthright Corporation established in 1989, a multidisciplinary corporation, was established to generate revenue to strengthen KIA’s ability to improve the quality of life for Inuit and dedicated to representing the interests of all Inuit in the Kivalliq region.

Sakku Investments’ mission is to enhance the social infrastructure and reinvest revenues in Inuit communities to actively participate in the wage economy.

Nukik Corp – was formed to harness and lead major infrastructure projects in the Kivalliq region of Nunavut. Its main focus at this time is the Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link, a nation-building, first-of-its-kind power and fibre-optic project coming to Nunavut from Manitoba with baseload renewable energy and fibre-optic internet connectivity offering lasting benefits to the Kivalliq region.
