Inuktitut Literacy Summer Camp

About the Camp:

The purpose of the Inuktitut Literacy Summer Camp is Inuktitut language maintenance, revitalization, and reclamation in Kivalliq Communities. Children will learn Inuktitut through fun, hands‑on activities such as music, games, storytelling, cooking, baking, chores, Elder visits, and out on the land day trips!

What children will learn:

• Everyday Inuktitut vocabulary used at home, on the land, and with peers

• Names of foods, drinks, tools, animals, plants, and land features

• Basic life skills like cooking, cleaning, and communicating

• Songs and activities that help children remember new words

Meals: Children will receive two meals a day + snacks.


We invite children, ages 7 to 12, to join the Inuktitut Literacy Summer Camp!

Children applications must include:

• Participant application

• Camp liability form (parents to sign)

• Photo release form (parents to sign)

For the selection process, we will collect all children’s names, and participants will be selected through a random draw.

Work at the Inuktitut Literacy Summer Camp!

KIA is seeking Inuit beneficiaries for the following positions:

• 2 certified Inuktitut teachers

• Summer students (ages 13-18)

• 1 Elder

• 1 cook

• 1 bear monitor

The staff will deliver and administer the camp in their own communities and support Inuktitut learning in a fun, happy and safe environment.

Requirements:

• Ability to speak and write Inuktitut

• Experience working with children

• Ability to lead activities

This is a great opportunity for students (ages 13-18) to learn more Inuktitut, gain work experience and have a connection with younger children and Elders.

Elders are invited to join as weekly guest speakers to share stories, knowledge, and cultural teachings with children.

Short-term employment applications must include:

• Employment application

• CRC/VSC letter (Request for criminal record check)

• Resume

• References

The Programs Department will receive and review all applications and select the optimal candidates.

Camp Locations

• In Arviat, Naujaat and Chesterfield Inlet, the summer camps will be at the schools.

• In Coral Harbour, Whale Cove, Rankin Inlet and Baker Lake the summer camps will be at the Community Learning Centres.
